Demos optimize for the wow moment. Products optimize for repeat use. The transition between the two is where many AI projects stall.
I have learned to ask early: would someone use this weekly, and what would make them stop?
Polish what matters
Not every surface needs to be perfect on day one. Focus polish on the core loop: onboarding, primary task completion, error recovery, and perceived speed.
Projects like Flappy Bird AI and Chapter Ops taught me that users forgive rough edges when the core experience delivers value quickly.
Close the last mile
The last mile includes auth, empty states, loading behavior, mobile layout, and observability. Demos skip this; products cannot.
Shipping the last mile is often what turns a technical prototype into something you would put your name on.
